Fully mounted 28" katana by Mukansa Smith Ono Yoshimitsu

SOLD

Here is a truly unique opportunity. Most know of Ono Yoshimitsu as he is one of the most famous smith in the world of Japanese swords today. He originally trained with Yoshindo Yoshihara and eventually was name Mukansa himself. For more information about Ono Yoshimitsu, please see our short biography page.

This sword is really an interesting piece. Ono Yoshimitsu used to actively train in Iaido, the art of drawing the sword. This was the sword he made and used for his own training. The blade shows all the distinctive features of Yoshimitsu's work. Tight, clean forging with a well defined deep habuchi. And even though the blade is only in a basic iai polish, Under proper lighting a tremendous amount of activities can still be seen in the sword.

In a proper art polish this blade would be absolutely stunning.

The blade is a serious piece without the ostentatious and loud activity you often see in high end blades. It was made to be a serious, understated but still beautiful piece.

The blade is mounted in simple iai mounts that are very well put together. The tsuba is iron with some wonderful gold work. The fuchi is simple and the kashira is a typical horn style. The menuki are fish, the tsukaito blue silk, and the samekawa has been lacquered black. The saya is a standard ishime and overall the entire sword presents itself as a serious piece of art.

Yoshimitsu also brushed his kanji on the solid silver habaki which the habakishi then deeply engraved for him.

The blade is simply signed by Yoshimitsu. Nothing elaborate.

This sword is an amazing bargain when you consider the cost of a Yamatorige by Ono Yoshimitsu. This sword is also interesting in that it shows what a smith will make when the motivation is to make a good sword for his training. And while it is a vastly simpler blade than most made by Yoshimitsu, the quality and skill displayed is undeniable. It is in a basic polish appropriate for a training blade. As it is you can make out a tremendous amount of activities. In a top notch art polish this sword would be screaming.

Nagasa is 28".
