Unpolished over 30" Art Shinsakuto by Komiya Kokuten
ON SALE: $6495 usd.
Big, robust choji hamon, itame hada
77 cm -- 2 shaku, 5 sun, 4 bu (30.3 inches)

This is a very well balance, long, wonderful art sword by Komiya Smith Kokuten. It is a wonderful shinogi zukuri with extended chu kissaki. The large, exuberent choji runs up fairly high in the ji on this very healthy sword. It will be a gorgeous sword if given a quality polish. A quick window has been polished into the sword to show exactly how "alive" the hamon is with long, deep ashi. It promises to be a stunning piece if put into a top notch togi.

The blade is signed omote: Chikushu ju Kotuken Saku
The ura is signed: Heisei Jukyu Nen Roku Gatsu Kichi Jitsu ( A lucky day in June, 2007)

In the following photo you can see how high the hamon rides on the ji. You can also see exactly how bright and vivid the hamon is even in a course filing of the smith's final shaping.

And as you can see below the hamon artfully comes back down to mid-blade near the machi.

And finally there are some hints of the robustness of the activity in this sword. And how big and well formed the "buds" of the choji are.

It is very difficult to get shinsakuto of this caliber out of Japan without first having to pay top dollar for polishing, habaki and shirasaya. This allows a buyer here to pick one up at a much lower price today and invest in an appropriate polish and mounting at a later date. The Komiya family of smiths are well known in Japan for both their top notch martial arts swords as well as their top notch art swords in competition. This one could be either depending on how far the buyer takes the polishing.
